Fuss about Mentions on Twitter? #wewantoldtwitterback

Don't forget to share

Have you seen the hashtag #wewantoldtwitterback and wondered what was going on, well yes, so did I.

I saw this being posted out……

There is a message from Twitter uses that states that Twitter has changed it’s policy so that now you will only see mentions, retweets and favourites from people you follow – This means that celebrities will never see your tweets to them unless they follow you.

I’ve seen nothing official from Twitter on this – have you? ..  However I have tested it – and it is correct. I can see it being a problem for some people.

We believe this to be a glitch though, or a bug of some sort in the iPhone application  – we have had it before where your mentions weren’t appearing at all, and if you deleted the application and re installed it, mentions reappeared.

What is going on with @Mentions on Twitter

People seem to think that there are new twitter rules for the iPhone app.

When you @mention someone that is using the Twitter iPhone application they will not see it in their Twitter stream or feed unless they are following you back.

If you are on a different application or the PC you will see the same message.

I just unfollowed a friend and got them to send me a message from their iPhone, with the @ I looked on the PC and there it was.  However – I looked on my iPhone and there is no mention.

UPDATE:  News just in … 🙂   Laura B – said that its also sometimes happening on Tweetdeck on the PC and Ken Barlow ….. Yes, Ken, said its also happening on Blackberry too.  Kierson said its on the Android – and Nester said on the Web.  Pretty much everywhere now then.   I am still hoping its just little problem at Twitter,  they should be up and awake soon to sort it out.

Most of the upset seems to be from people that follow celebrities but this could affect businesses too.  If you don’t follow someone back and they tweet you about your product, you might not see it, if you only have access to the iPhone app.

Missing Mentions on Twitter?

Fans that are follow celebrities however are outraged and as I said the hashtag has been trending for hours now – they are frantic if they now tweet their Favourite  famous person there is no way the tweet will be seen if they are using the application.

People are tweeting there is a new rule on twitter (that is fake) as I said there is nothing on the Twitter blog or anywhere else stating this.  It seems this has now turned into people posting pictures and wanting views and retweets.

What people are saying on twitter #WeWantOldTwitterback

You can still get notification by email but no tweets, which is okay for businesses but do you really think that celebrities are going to want 700 emails a day?

There has been a petition started – > http://twitition.com/tl8zt

There is one thing, it might make more companies and people, follow back – like those people that think they are famous and only follow back 100 people, interesting.

Lets see how this unfolds.  Will keep you informed, and please let me know if you know anymore.

Its over – panic can stop now … Twitter admit that there was a bug over mentions.

UPDATE Twitter have confirmed that it was a bug and that it is now fixed.

  • There’s nothing from Twitter on their development blog about this, so I think we’ve either got a bug here (affecting the Interactions stream on official twitter apps) or an undocumented feature in test, whereby @mentions from certain accounts which don’t meet some criteria are filtered from the Interactions stream.

I posted my own experiences of the problem at https://dev.twitter.com/discussions/15477

    • Thanks Gerry, I agree, its very unusually for Twitter not to post something about a change like this – so I think it is possibly just a bug. I said glitch but I might change it to bug, thanks. I don’t see it being beneficial in anyway so this must be the answer. Thanks again.

    • It has to be a glitch .. i am using tweetdeck on the laptop and i am receiving some mentions from people i dont follow yet others are not going through . i created a new twitter to test this theory and the tweet went thru instantly yet someone elses didnt arrive.. definitely a glitch , the rumour mongering isnt helping matters

      • Oh thanks so its not even totally related to the apps then. I will add this to the blog thanks Laura.

  • Not just iphone. i’m having the same problem on a Blackberry

    • Ken!! Didn’t you? … never mind. Ah well that makes sense someone else just mentioned its happening on tweetdeck sometimes too – I will amend the post, thanks

It looks It happens in web too.

I made a test on PC (With web browser), and I can’t see mentions where a not-following-account mentions me. What I can see are mentions from an account I don’t follow, just If that mention is part of a conversation / reply for me.

    • Ah thanks!! that’s annoying then, I’ve added those to the blog post just above. Definitely a glitch in the system.

  • Kiersten

Same thing happening on my Android.

    • Thanks Kiersten, it seems its all over now then….. very odd.

  • Twitter Support (@support) said that it was a bug and has now been fixed. (I haven’t checked if the problem is still there though)

Ok, so this is what is happening to me………..let me explain.

I have two twitter accounts, one running on the ipad and one on the iPhone. My @ipad account is following my @iphone but the @iphone does not follow my @ipad. With me so far! Basically pretend my @iphone is the celebrity account.

If I tweet from my @ipad and ‘mention’ my @iphone in the tweet you should get the tweet in the @connect section, sadly not. If your not using the iPhone twitter app then you get a notification and link where you can reply. This works but if you don’t reply to the tweet then all trace of the ‘mention’ disappears.

If your actually using your iphone twitter app then you get absolutely nothing, no notification and no mention in your @connect section. You never know that your twitter account has been mentioned. Definitely a fault with the Twitter App.

Any tweets that are received as @replies do appear correctly in the @connect section.

  • Prosonman

    Not fixed as of 30.4.2013
People are still missing @mentions. If you run your iphone app and mention yourself from another account you won’t see anything….ever!

Close your iphone app and then mention yourself from another account and bingo you get a notification.
