The redesign on Empire Avenue – Explained.

empireavenuelogo

I first blogged about Empire avenue 10 months ago – when I had just started. Back then I didn’t realise the impact it would have on my social media strategies,  networks and more importantly I that would find a fantastic community of people that now mean a great deal to me.

Anyway – I digress…

Empire Avenue have relaunched a new design – which is said to engage you more with your social networks.

Most people that “play” Empire avenue have always used it to engage and connect with other users, moving that to their other networks.  I think previously that was the problem, that, people that don’t play Empire Avenue do not see it this way at all.  Empire avenue for me, is primarily not a game but is a way to connect and engage with a brillant community of “players”.  Empire avenue is fun to play but it should also be part of your social media strategy.  It is possible to connect, interact and engage with clients and/or customers, contacts and like-minded people to help and share, when using this tool correctly.

Empire avenue are trying to make this more perceptible by supposedly making it easier to connect via their new headings expand, engage and evaluate.

New headings on Empire Avenue

  • Expand – Get more followers
  • Engage – Talk to your followers
  • Evaluate – Measure Your success

Expand

On this new page you have a number of users listed as follows
Recommended (by others)
Leaders (site wide top leaders
Recent Arrivals
Social Networks
Empire Avenue’s trending communities.
These were all available to see on the previous version but now they are all together on this one page, which I do like.

Engage

This page is to help you to engage with content on your Facebook and Twitter networks – you can even post a shout out on your networks from this page.  Also on the right hand side you have
Recent Shareholders
Recent Mentions
Recent Arrivals
From this page you can reply to messages, or tweets, you can retweet and you can view what your followers are doing on their own networks, without even leaving empire avenue.

Evaluate

This show your scores so that you have evautate your success, which includes pie charts on…
Network ScoreAudience & Quality Score Breakdown – Share Price Breakdown
Buying HistoryShares Bought vs. Shares Sold
7 Days Share Price
All of this information was available on the old design – on various pages but mostly on the Advisors page which is also still there, just click the icon.
With the new design you can click on each icon on this page to see how your networks are performing.  You can view various interesting and important statistics on networks you have added – such as Empire, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, facebook page, youtube, wordpress, instragram, google+ etc. With a variety of information.
Youtube, here shows – How many videos, subs, views, comments and favorites
One thing to remember is that this new design is all icon related – if you want to view a players performances on twitter for instance you would go to their profile and hover over the icon and it will tell you how many tweets this week and  how many today.  More tweets, Steve :)

How to endorse other users blogs

You need to go to their profile page, click on blogs – and you will see a list of their blogs which you can then click on to endorse. As you can see, I have already endorsed Jackie’s blogs.

One thing I haven’t found yet – is an easy way to see mentions – you can see who’s mentioned you on your notifications page and the engaged page but not what they said On the engaged page, you can click the mention but you have to scroll through all of their mentions to see your own.  Their must be an easier way, has anyone found it?

People were discussing that they couldn’t find the edit public profile so that you can change your bio – this is in Account settings – privacy – at the bottom it says Customize your public profile. However there is a bug that logs me out when I click it. Not sure if that will be the same with you.

All in all, apart from the bugs – I do like the new design, it will take a bit of getting use to, as always with something new. We all had our shortcuts and ways to do things which are now going to be different, but remember we are all in the same boat or avenue.    I do think that this new design will help new players see right away what Empire Avenue is for, and that is to expand, engage and evaluate your social networks!

Tips or How to

From Steven Johnson

To find Portfolio value

Go to their profile page – on the right you will see – “30 day share price” view more – click this and you be shown a graphs with Today’s share price history – Last 30 days – Last 7 days and portfolio value with other stats.

And, if someone is in the top 100 for their country, you can still see their # in that leader board: http://www.empireavenue.com/leaders/wealth

If you have any tips or how to’s that you can share with us, I’m sure we will all appreciate that, leave you ticker so that we can thank you. :)

Thanks – this is a helpful drawing together of the various changes. It will take me some time to get used to the ‘engage’ page, which is far too ‘busy’ for my taste- I can’t process 20 things at once and sometimes I will want to look at them all, more often only one or two. I also miss our old ‘ladders’ – I had finally got to 3rd on the Vice-Presidents list and now it seems to have disappeared altogether (or do you know different?)

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

OH! I hadn’t even noticed that yet … thanks I’ll have to have a look!

    • http://twitter.com/tpr2 tpr2

the leaders board can still be found, just go to expand….leaders…more and there they are.

Thanks for nice article !! Till now seems to me earlier one better; it could be because of habituated; lets see another couple of days to make the comments either good or bad!

      Thanks Mithu :)

Looking good Michelle, I’m still trying to get use to all the places to go :-)

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Yes, many more places – or just different places ? :)

  • http://drupal.txwikinger.me.uk/ Ralph Janke

Generally, I like the new direction, even there are still a lot of things to iron out. The evaluate pages are great (if they work.. my 4sq graph actually shows the data for twitter, not for 4sq). Some of the graphs still have bugs. The engage page needs to got further (so far I was only able to tweet/retweet directly… similar things should be possible with more networks).

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Thanks for your comment Ralph – Yes, there are still bugs aren’t there. Hopefully this will be sorted out – thats to be expected as an early adopter I guess. Yes you can’t do anything with youtube but you can go to the link.

      • http://twitter.com/EvolveTom Tom Ohle

Yep, we do still have a number of tweaks and fixes to make to it. It was a mad dash to get the site built :) . We definitely will allow you to engage with other networks; it’s just going to take a bit of time to do.

    Hi Michelle,

Great post.  Thanks for explaining some of these new changes.  I’ve only been on The Avenue for 2 months so it was traumatic for me to experience the new design because I was still finding my way around the own.

I agree that the Engage page is way too busy.  At least when I use some of my other SM tools like Hootsuite I can control what I see and where it shows up.  On the new Engage it’s too much to hit your eyes all at once.  I see the potential promise and I like that you can tweet and RT directly but it needs some work.

It also seems awkward to endorse other EAv blogs.  It used to be easy to find them from the Connections but now you have to find them a different way and click on them before you can endorse.  I guess there are both pros and cons for all the new aspects.

One thing I have learned about EAv is that it does require a significant amount of commitment and time or else you won’t receive the best benefit from the SM channel like you might in a less demanding channel like Twitter or G+.

Overall even though I spend 4-6 hours a day working on EAv projects, I think it’s been a good experience and worth the effort.  I think people need to understand what EAv is all about so that they realize it’s not just a game but a total experience.  The more effort you invest the better the results.

Thanks again for taking the time to share all of your new findings on the new designs.

    ~Karen Marie

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Yes, it does seem awkward but I do hope its just because we are not used to that way of working. Wow you spend much more time than I do. Yes I like that – its a total experience.  Thanks for your comment Karen.

    • http://twitter.com/EvolveTom Tom Ohle

The Engage page is absolutely too busy :) — I made that comment to our guys here today! We’re still tweaking!

  • Fatimea Tedora

Hi Michelle,   I like the new EA design. Thank you for your great post!

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

      Thanks Fatimea :)

  • Clausottesen

There are few reasons I don’t like the front page. First of all it takes ages to log in, my computer is not slow by any means. You click on a shareholder and it freeze. It is getting to tech, it was a great front page before somebody had a go of it. I feel sorry for the team that spend all that time re do something that was easy self explainable before. It is more difficult now to work with.

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

There seems to be various bugs that different people are getting, I’m not sure how that works – like I have no problem with logging in or freezing. But someone else was having trouble buying people earlier. I think these things will iron themselves out. And maybe they will make changes to the things people don’t like – I wonder.  Thanks for your comment.

  • http://twitter.com/fractals john philpin

i don’t like the new direction – they are moving into a follower position in the social media world – not a leader – we don’t need another place to engage, certainly not with the UI they have provided – maybe they have shifted their strategy – and hence the changes – but where i THOUGHT they were going is not now where they seem to be focussed.

Just one example – engage – they have something called community – they are there – people join them and don’t use them – so rather the work out why – and make it better – they reach out to others spaces – there are so many ways they could have brought communities (and interests – which they also ignore) into the strategy of what they are doing  - but no – they follow what the other hundreds of sites do – sorry to me they need

    1) to decide on their differentiation – and then build benefits on that
    2) embrace their very engaged player community a lot more
    3) get someone who understands UI to be a designer
    4) beta test properly – before rolling out
    5) allow you to roll back to the old look and methods – if you don’t like what you find

BTW – on that last one – - i was totally mislead – i get a message – do you want to integrate twitter more tightly with EA – to which I said yes – and from there the entire game, interface, functionality, everything changed.

believe me i am not against change – but am against change for the worst – and i don’t believe i am alone.

writing my own lost on this later this pm

    • http://twitter.com/confluencemedia Elza van Swieten

Totally! I was looking for a way to express my disapproval in this whole ‘change’. You said it right, my thoughts exactly. What else is funny, is that there is a whole community active on Facebook with experts, and NOBODY is asked anything. Only a few design issues, like ‘do you like our movie’ or ‘what do you think about the new faces page’. No direction questions asked.

      • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

I hope that soon, we will get some more discussions going on, and they will see what people do and don’t like about the changes.   Thanks for your comment Elza

        • http://twitter.com/fractals john philpin

just added my post into the stream : http://beyondbridges.net/2012/03/empire-avenue/ – to me its not about the UI and the rest – it is that I believe they are missing out on a strategic opportunity – as i said in my post above – to be a leader – but the changes position the FIRMLY as a follower

i also think they are well over due to adopt a platform like Get Satisfaction : http://getsatisfaction.com/

      • http://twitter.com/EvolveTom Tom Ohle

Elza, there were several members (active ones) who had access to the beta version of the new layout ahead of time, and the feedback they provided was instrumental to this redesign. We are absolutely considering feedback from a wide range of people.

        • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

I personally only knew of one person that had the beta and that I think was only for a week ?  I could be wrong.  But good to know you are still listening out for feedback @twitter-5436192:disqus thanks for comment.

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Yes there are many people that feel the same way as  you. And many have been asking if there is a way back to the old design if you want it. Yes it does need some more work and its surprising it was beta tested for longer and rolled out slowly. I personally don’t like it when a platform is changed for no reason when it was working well in my eyes but it seems to be a growing trend.

Thanks for your comments as I say I’m sure there will be many with the same views

  • http://twitter.com/confluencemedia Elza van Swieten

Empire Avenue has a great crowd of loyal fans and look at the effort they are making to explain all the changes they are making, voluntarily. I am with John Philpin here. I am not in favor of these changes. I see EAv fading out to be just one out of many social platforms and loosing it’s core business.

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

      Yes
Steven Healey made this point too – now that would be a bad move.

  • http://queenofmydomains.com/ Deanna

Thanks for the information. I agree that the new design will take some getting used to. I wasn’t used to the old format!

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

LOL – I was just getting used to it, another 10 months to get used to this one then.   Thanks Deanna

  • http://www.facebook.com/stevenjhealey Steven Healey

Thank you Michelle for highlighting an explaining the changes.

Since I joined EAv I have made many new contacts and friends and it has opened up many new opportunities.
After spending a day with the ‘new look’ there are many things I do like. However integrating Twitter and Facebook feeds and being able to post detracts from the site . I do not want another site to post from,.
I want to engage directly on the site and the linked Facebook groups.

They should not be trying to outhoot Hootsuite.

Empire Avenue is unique , it encourages interaction on many levels

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Yes, I don’t need somewhere else to post from either – but those things you just don’t need to use.  People don’t like the engagement page, so.. don’t use it – you don’t need to even upon that page up.  Yes I agree with that it is unique and it will be spoilt if they try to complete on that level – thanks Steven for those points.

  • Jackie Bigford

Great article Michelle, I picked up a few good tips. I was part of the Beta Testing and really like many of the changes.  I find the interface much faster to navigate and I really like that the divs are now showing next to the share price on our own home pages. I tweeted this and shared on my business page on Facebook.

Thank you for highlighting me in the article, so honoured my friend :-)

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Ah Jackie you were Beta Testing, how long did you test for?   – Thanks for the interesting view.  You are welcome of course x

  • http://jbking2.blogspot.com J. B. King

I miss the advisors but I’m also still finding my footing on Empire Avenue.  I wonder if other niche sites would be integrated at some point like some of the StackExchange sites that have a reputation model that may be interesting to blend together. From the (e)WISEKING

    • http://twitter.com/EvolveTom Tom Ohle

The advisors are still there; they’re just not hidden behind characters :) . Hit the Evaluate tab — it’s all there!

      • http://jbking2.blogspot.com J. B. King

I miss the characters.  I know the data is still there.  I just liked the humorous dressing they had previously as well as how some of them had to be bought.

  • http://twitter.com/tpr2 tpr2

As you probably realise the shout outs was a huge component of my engagement on the site….in this new layout it is nearly impossible to find those shouts.

Already my daily actions are down and my divs have slid in the 4 days I’ve had the new layout from 2.07 to 1.96.I hope they sort them.

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Its really odd though, I’ve had been on my account and my divs are up 6 – they never go up that quick – and I’m looking very healthy indeed – although I did have that post to go out today – I think I have had a few extra buys from it. I will check now its working again. lol

Thanks for your comment tho Tez :)

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

      HI Thanks for coming. :)

  • http://twitter.com/organichat craig daniels

The “Tiles”  is a nightmare… i won’t use that page .. I would love to see the same flowing stream that FB uses so I can scroll through and quickly catch the info that I want to act on…     I am in the middle with the rest of the changes neither for or against..

I had anticipated this new roll out to take into account things like why so many people seem to join and then drop out, i was hoping new people would be given 2 or 3 million to help them not feel so overwhelmed. EA is a lot of work and should be made easier for new people so they don’t run away screaming.

I like EA and plan on staying but I do think we could gets tons more people if they didn’t have to spend so much time at the beginning to get up and running. I came in with no social foot print and must have put in a million hours to just to get up to where I can breathe.. If I knew what I know now in terms of time I would not have done it and I know others who feel the same way…

    Well that’s my rant

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Wow, you must have had to do a lot of work to get up and running.  It would have been nice to have been given a bonus lol :)  Thanks for the comments Craig.

Nice work. Thanks for explaining. Not sure how to access it. My page looks the same as before.

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

you’ll get something pop up at some point, or it will just change…. Thanks for the comment

  • EmmaGeraln

I like it for the most part. To be honest I think the previous layout was pretty poor, (but it was better than the site when I first started). The previous version was cluttered and poorly arranged. They have improved things, although the new Engage section is a bit of a jumble.

Time will tell, once I’m used to it I’ll have a better idea what I really think!

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

Yes thats what I think Emma, it will take a while. First thoughts were arghhhhhhhhhhhhh lol :)

  • http://twitter.com/tomwoods55 Tom Woods

I am finding it far less user friendly and cumbersome

    • http://techieminx.com/ michelledh

I am too – at the moment – getting used to the layout is difficult.

Design looks easy on the eye but us Minnions fear change and I cant seem to be able to buy any luxury goods as I cant find them?

I can’t either – where it says shop, it says luxury items but they aren’t in there.
